Kate and Gerry McCann put the search for their missing four-year-old temporarily on hold after a mysterious caller claimed to know where Madeleine McCann is, it has been reported.
The "credible" phonecall came from an unregistered payphone from an unidentified country, although it is not thought to be from Morocco, where a previous sighting has been reported.
According to a police source the caller asked to speak directly to the McCanns and provided such detail that it was thought important enough to alert them.
Their planned flight to the Netherlands from Berlin was put on hold in case the couple needed to go to the UK to speak to advisors about the call.
"A man called saying he knew where Madeleine was and wanted to speak to the McCanns," a Spanish police source said.
"This did not appear to be a prank call and the information was felt credible enough to warrant the couple being informed immediately."
But after efforts to re-establish contact with the man failed Mr and Mrs McCann decided to fly on to Holland and continue their European tour.
They are reported to be ready on stand-by however in case they need to fly back to the UK.
It how now been 35 days since Madeleine was taken from her bed at the resort of Praia Da Luz in Portugal.
