Madeleine McCann was abducted on May 3rd
The McCann family have paid tribute to the continued awareness campaigns run in Portugal to keep their daughter's disappearance in the spotlight.

Writing on his website blog, Gerry McCann said he thanked local communities for "remembering" four-year-old Madeleine, who was abducted from the family's holiday apartment in the Algarve on May 3rd.

"A small event took place in Porto in the north of Portugal today to remember missing children," Mr McCann said.

"It was a large school's end-of-year musical and the children and staff released balloons. It is good that local communities are staging events like this and we thank them for remembering Madeleine."

Mr McCann also noted that he and his wife Kate were "glad to hear the young British girl kidnapped in Nigeria was returned safely" after she was released late last night.

The McCann family are continuing to hold awareness events related to their daughter's abduction in order to keep the story in the news.

On June 22nd a number of events took place to mark the 50th day since the four-year-old's abduction and the McCanns released 50 balloons on the beach at Praia da Luz, the resort where they had been on holiday with Madeleine.

The family said at the time: "The response to our request for events on the 50th day has been overwhelming. This global support gives us both strength and fresh determination to carry on our campaign."
