Friends of Kate and Gerry McCann have hit out at media reports, mainly from within Portugal, suggesting that Madeleine died in her holiday apartment.
Rachael Oldfield, who had dinner with the McCanns the night Madeleine was abducted, said yesterday that some of the claims being printed were "ludicrous".
Some newspapers have suggested that family and friends may have information about Madeleine's death and that recent police investigations have been linked to this notion.
Mrs Oldfield, who was on holiday with her husband and one-year-old girl in the Portuguese Praia da Luz resort, said that leaks and speculation were painful to the family.
"I think there are some leaks coming from the police but a lot of what I have read recently has been completely untrue," she said.
DNA tests from a police investigation into a possible sighting of Madeleine in Belgium proved negative yesterday.
Meanwhile particles of what is reportedly blood found in the holiday apartment where the four-year-old was last seen are currently being analysed in the UK.
Sniffer dogs from Britain discovered the sample in renewed searches and investigations by the local authorities.
The McCanns, who have been based in the Algarve since their daughter was abducted on May 3rd, have remained positive about Madeleine's well-being.
Writing in his blog on the website findmadeleine.com, Mr McCann said: "There is still absolutely no evidence that Madeleine has been seriously harmed and Kate and I have to believe she is still alive."
