Manchester United and Villareal both progressed to the knock-out stages of the Champions League after a drab 0-0 draw in the Madrigal.
The last three contests between these sides had finished goalless, so it was a safe bet that chances would be few and fare between.
The visitors just edged it in terms, with Cristiano Ronaldo
going closen either side of half-time.
the first effort saw Villareal goalkeeper Diego Lopez produce an excellent save, tipping his deflected 25-yard effort onto the crossbar.
Lopez was again equal to the winger's effort six minutes into the second period when he saved at his near post.
The game ended in bad temper as Villareal played the last eight minutes with ten men after Joan Capdevila was given a straight red card for a high tackle on Ronaldo.
Capdevila had earlier headed off his own line from Rooney's deflected cross.
Rooney had also incensed the home crowd moments before Capdevila's dismissal, who felt he went to ground too easily.
In truth the contest offered little to get excited about as both teams seemed happy with the draw.
If Sir Alex Ferguson's men beat Aalborg at Old Trafford in two weeks time they will top the group and will be seeded in the draw for the knock-out stages.
