17-year-old boy found guilty of murdering care worker Magda Pniewska in south-east London
A 17-year-old boy has been found guilty of murdering a care worker in south-east London last year.

An Old Bailey jury convicted Armel Gnango of shooting Magda Pniewska in October 2007.

Ms Pniewska was on her way home from work when a shootout broke out in Lewisham.

The Metropolitan police said at the time that the 26-year-old, who was originally from Poland, had walked into a crossfire.

Commenting on the case, crown prosecution service reviewing lawyer Jane Scholefield said: "Even though the defendant did not fire the fatal round and even though Magda Pniewska was not the intended target of either gunman, the defendant bears a joint criminal liability for her death.

"The prosecution could not show that he fired the lethal shot but the issue was one of joint enterprise. Each fired their guns with intent to kill at a time when there were bystanders present between them."

At the time of her death Ms Pniewska had been talking on the phone to her sister in Poland, who told the court she heard a gunshot and the line go dead.

A statement from her family described the care worker as a "darling creature whose happiness and dreams have been taken away".

"She was like a wind full of life," the family said.

"Today she is not among us anymore but her spirit still lives among us and our memories of her will never die."End of story
