Obama accuses Bush of political attack

Barack Obama has accused the president of attacking him
Barack Obama has accused George Bush of politically attacking him after the US president compared those in favour of talking with terrorists to Nazi appeasers.

Mr Obama, the frontrunner in race to become the Democrat candidate to replace Mr Bush as the next president, has previously claimed to be in favour of negotiating with Iran.

During his visit to Israel, to mark the country's 60th anniversary, the president declared today: "Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals."

"We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: 'Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.' We have an obligation to call this what it is - the false comfort of appeasement."

In response, Mr Obama released a statement claiming: "It is sad that President Bush would use a speech to the Knesset on the 60th anniversary of Israel's independence to launch a false political attack. George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists."

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino countered though claiming the president's comments were not aimed directly at Mr Obama.

"I understand when you're running for office you sometimes think the world revolves around you," Ms Perino said.

"That is not always true. And it is not true in this case."

Mr Obama currently holds a slender lead in the race to decide whether he or Hillary Clinton will face Republican John McCain in national election to decide who will become the next US president.End of story
