Wigan forward Gareth Hock could miss out on the Rugby League World Cup after allegedly manhandling referee Ian Smith during his side's 34-4 Super League defeat by Huddersfield on Friday night.
The 24-year-old could receive an eight-match ban he was punished for dissent and then shown the red card after appearing to push the match official.
The second-row will automatically appear before the Rugby Football League's disciplinary panel on Tuesday and looks likely to be charged with "behaviour contrary to the true spirit of the game".
Physical abuse of match officials is among the most serious of offences and carries a minimum suspension of eight matches.
Wigan have only five matches of the regular season left, plus any play-off ties, so a lengthy suspension would effectively bring an end to his season.
Hock is also likely to be a candidate for England's 24-strong squad for the World Cup, which starts on October 25th against Papua New Guinea.
Friday's defeat, Wigan's third in a row, dealt a blow to their hopes of securing a top-four finish - and a home tie in the play-offs.
