Anne Darwin, whose husband was presumed dead for five years, has been remanded in custody after being charged with two counts of deception.
The 55-year-old was arrested at Manchester airport upon her return from Panama on Sunday after confessing to having used funds from John Darwin's life insurance policy even though she knew her husband was not dead.
She is due to reappear at Hartlepool magistrates court on December 14th over the charges of obtaining £25,000 and £137,000 in funds dishonestly in order to pay off debts.
Cleveland police's Detective Superintendent Tony Hutchison yesterday appealed for information at a news conference.
He said: "We need to know where both Mr and Mrs Darwin have been, both in Europe and North and South America and, of course, we need to know what they have been saying.
"We need to know who they have been with, and we need to know what they have been doing."
Yesterday, detectives said they believed Mr Darwin had been living under the name John Jones and released a photo of a man resembling the suspect with a greying bushy beard in the hope it could prompt people's memories.
Mr Darwin walked into a central London police station on December 1st claiming he believed he was a missing person. He had disappeared on March 21st 2002 after apparently going canoeing.
On May 7th of that year his kayak was discovered on a Hartlepool beach, with an inquest later delivering an open verdict. He has since been arrested for obtaining a money transfer by deception and making an untrue statement to obtain a passport.
The 57-year-old has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before magistrates via video-link on December 14th.
