Pakistan's military has blamed the US for an "unprovoked and cowardly" air raid which left at least 11 soldiers dead.
The incident hit at the "very basis of co-operation and sacrifice with which Pakistani soldiers are supporting the coalition in the war against terror", a statement declared.
In response, the US military, however, said the air assault was aimed at Taliban fighters and had been co-ordinated with Islamabad.
"Coalition forces informed the Pakistan army that they were being engaged by anti-Afghan forces," said the US military.
The alleged air strike came after clashes on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border earlier on Wednesday.
A Taliban spokesman previously confirmed that eight militants were killed in the fighting.
The clashes took place near a border post in the Mohmand region of Pakistan and facing the Afghanistan Kunar province.
Taliban militants are known to have a strong presence in the border regions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
