Pakistan's army has said it has killed 60 members of the Taliban in operations in the country's north-western Swat valley.

A spokesman for the country's military said air strikes had been launched on local militants after troops found a Chinese engineer, who had bee kidnapped by the Taliban in August, in the area.

In a statement, the army said: "According to our information, at least 60 Taliban died and many others were wounded during yesterday's operation around Matta town. This is the same area where one Chinese engineer was recovered."

There has been no independent confirmation of the casualties and the army statement did not mention any losses on the Pakistani side.

The country scenic Swat valley has been wracked by insurgency as local militias led by cleric Maulana Fazlullah seek to impose an Islamic system of Sharia law in the country.
