Pakistani troops open fire on Nato helicopters on border with Afghanistan, alliance claims

Pakistan In Focus

Pakistani troops have opened fire on Nato helicopters on the border with Afghanistan, the alliance has claimed.

Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said its helicopters had come under "small arms fire" from a Pakistan military checkpoint on the border near Tanai district, Khowst.

An Isaf spokesperson said the helicopters were conducting routine operations and "at no time" crossed into Pakistani airspace.

"Isaf forces and the Pakistani military are working together to resolve the matter," Isaf added.

There are no reports of any damage to the helicopters or casualties as a result of the gunfire.

Today's incident follows similar clashes between Pakistani troops, tribal militiamen and US soldiers.

Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari has vowed to end American raids into the country's northern tribal regions, saying they undermined Islamabad's sovereignty and the war on terror.
