Police in Pakistan have said they have killed five Taliban militants in a shoot-out in the country's southern city of Karachi.
The city's police said it had raided an apartment in the west of Karachi after receiving a tip-off that the Taliban had been planning an attack on the city.
In comments cited by the Reuters news agency, Karachi police chief Waseem Ahmed said: "We raided the house on a tip-off that militants were planning attacks in the city.
"As we reached near the house, they opened fire. Our force returned the fire and five militants were killed."
He added that the five men killed in the attack were loyal to the chief of the country's Taliban Baituallah Mehsud.
Over the past few months, the Pakistani army has been conducting a major military operation in the north-westerly region of Swat and is now looking to expand the battle against the Taliban into South Waziristan.
