Binyam Mohamed will have the opportunity to integrate himself into UK society once he is released from Guantanamo Bay, a Liberal Democrat peer has said.

Lord Carlile, the UK reviewer of terror laws, told the BBC's Today programme UK resident Binyam Mohamed would be "given every opportunity, subject to the law, to integrate himself back" into society.

The government is unlikely to take legal action against Mr Mohamed due to claims he has been tortured.

"There is some evidence that he has been tortured," Lord Carlile added.

"The British government could not act on any such evidence because evidence obtained by torture is simply not acceptable."

Mr Mohamed was charged for his alleged involvement in a plot to detonate a "dirty bomb" in America but the charges were later dropped.

The evidence was based on confessions made under torture, while he was held in Pakistan, Mr Mohamed has claimed.

The role of MI5 during the questioning went "far beyond that of a bystander" the High Court said.

Mr Mohamed could arrive in Britain as early as Monday, after spending more than four years at the military base in Cuba.

However, it is still unclear whether Ethiopian-born Mr Mohamed will be allowed to stay in the country.
