Agreement has been reached on an investigation into the death of Pakistani politician Benazir Bhutto.

Ms Bhutto was assassinated on December 27th last year at an election rally in Rawalpindi amid intense political instability in the sub-continental country.

Officials from her Pakistan People's party (PPP), which she led and has subsequently become the leading party in Pakistan's coalition government, had called for a probe into her death.

Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told reporters that "broad agreement" has been reached with the UN on the investigation's nature, its funding, composition and extent of access to information.

And UN ambassador Munir Akram confirmed a "broad understanding on some very difficult issues" had been established.

The proposed investigation follows a completed report presented by British authorities to Pakistan's government in February.

Metropolitan police officers visited Pakistan and concluded that Ms Bhutto died of a severe head injury sustained as the consequence of the bomb blast.

She was standing through the sunroof of a moving vehicle when the blast occurred but there had been speculation a gunman had shot her moments beforehand, prompting conspiracy theories.End of story
