Super League side Harlequins have agreed a new one-year extension to veteran stand-off Henry Paul's contract, which the player says will see him through until his retirement.

The 33-year-old New Zealand international is now contracted at the Twickenham Stoop until the end of the 2008 season and the player says he intends to retire once this deal runs out.

"I'm very happy all round. I am glad that [Quins head coach Brian McDermott] and all the coaching staff and management have shown their confidence in me and offered me another year.

"It's probably going to be my last season so I hope to make it a big one."

Paul, who has 23 caps for the Kiwis throughout his 14-year professional career, famously switched codes to rugby union in 2001 – going on to play for England in his new discipline.

However after a disappointing run for club and country, when he never quite made the grade at international level, he decided to switch back and rejoined rugby league by signing for Harlequins in 2006.

And McDermott claimed it was Paul's unique pull that had made the decision to offer the veteran a new deal.

"People like Henry Paul don't come along every day. We are really excited to have signed him for another year," he said.

"He's been the cornerstone of our pack this season no matter what position he's been playing. He's one of those people that every club needs."
