England win toss and field in Lord's Test

England's players watched the rain falling at Lord's this morning
England have won the toss and chosen to field against New Zealand in the rain-delayed first Test at Lord's.

The start of the three-match series was delayed because of persistent rain in north-west London, but a pitch inspection at 11:45 BST revealed underfoot conditions were improving.

The covers were briefly taken off at around midday but quickly replaced when some spots of rain prompted umbrellas to go up amongst the crowd.

Players took an early lunch after the first morning was completely washed out, although officials have said play will now start at 13:20 BST.

Play had been due to begin at 10:30 BST but overcast skies and showers in the morning prevented the players from taking the field on time.

Umpires Steve Bucknor and Simon Taufel have deemed the pitch playable, provided rain ceases, and consequently conducted the toss earlier.

England skipper Michael Vaughan won and immediately chose to field - the damp conditions and heavy cloud cover likely to be conducive to the seam bowling of Ryan Sidebottom, Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson.

The home side's traditional main threat with swing - Matthew Hoggard – has been named as the 12th man for the match and will consequently not be allowed to bowl.

New Zealand's team selection was much as expected, although fast bowler Tim Southee has been picked ahead of Iain O'Brien for only his second-ever appearance for the Black Caps.End of story
