EU referendum protestors scale crane in Parliament Square

Monday, 03 Mar 2008 09:41
Protestors demanding referendum on EU treaty climb on top of crane overlooking Parliament Square
Two protestors have scaled a crane overlooking Parliament Square to unfurl banners calling for a referendum on the EU treaty.

Police said the two men climbed the crane, attached to scaffolding at Middlesex Guildhall, in the early hours of this morning.

"We were called at 02:20 GMT to reports of a group of protestors in Parliament Square attempting to climb a crane," a Metropolitan police spokesperson said.

"On arrival police discovered two male protesters on the crane barge unfurling a banner.

"We are currently speaking to them."

Their protest comes days before the House of Commons votes on a Conservative amendment to the EU treaty bill.

Signed by EU leaders last December, the Lisbon treaty was designed to replace an aborted constitution rejected by voters in France and the Netherlands.

The government had pledged to hold a referendum on any EU constitution, but insists such a move is not necessary with the treaty, despite accusations it has inherited many of its predecessor's key aspects.

This weekend, a sample vote of 150,000 people in ten UK constituencies resulted in an 88 per cent 'yes' vote for a referendum on the treaty.

The I Want a Referendum campaign group, which organised the unofficial ballot, says it is not involved in today's protest.End of story
