Princess Eugenie and her friends were targeted by muggers in Cambodia, according to reports.

The 19-year-old daughter of the Duke of York and Sarah Ferguson was on a night out in the capital Phnom Penh when her friend had her purse snatched.

The thief was tackled by royal protection officers, who were then pelted with stones by another in the gang.

According to reports, the officers feared for the princess's safety and let the thief go to lead her away.

A Buckingham Palace source told The Sun: "They feared the incident was escalating out of control and took the decision to focus on the safety of their principal."

Eugenie is on a gap-year trip and has already been to Thailand and South Africa.
