British pop star Mika has swept the board at the World Music Awards, taking an amazing four prizes at the Monaco ceremony.

The Grace Kelly star took gongs for bestselling new artist, bestselling male entertainer, bestselling pop/rock artist and best British artist.

However he was unable to perform his debut single due to a severe bout of laryngitis.

Celine Dion moved from coaching X Factor hopefuls to receiving the ceremony's highest accolade, the Legend Award.

Prince Albert of Monaco presented the French Canadian singer with the award, saying her voice "soothes the world's hearts and creates smiles of love across the face of the world".

Accepting the trophy, the 39-year-old dedicated the award to her family, saying: "Every time I go on stage, it's all of them going on stage with me."

The Quebecoise chanteuse already holds the Diamond Award, the World Music Awards prize for the bestselling female artist of all time.

Senegalese-American hitmaker Akon was named the bestselling R 'n' B male artist, bestselling internet artist and bestselling African artist at last night's glitzy ceremony.
