The 22nd James Bond film has achieved a record opening for the franchise in the US.
Quantum of Solace, starring Daniel Craig, took more than $70 million (£47.4 million) to claim the box office top spot across the Atlantic.
2002's Die Another Day had achieved the previous highest US opening for a 007 film while Quantum of Solace's predecessor Casino Royale took $30 million (£20 million) less.
Director Marc Forster's take on the British secret agent was the only major release of the weekend in the US, with each of last week's top five films falling one place.
Last week's number one, animated sequel Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, took just over half of Quantum of Solace's weekend gross as England's deadliest weapon dominated US cinemagoers.
High box office takings are expected next weekend as studios unveil their Thanksgiving offerings.
Animated comedy Bolt features the voice talents of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus while vampire fantasy Twilight stars former Harry Potter actor Robert Pattinson.
