Sale Sharks lock Brent Cockbain has been banned for five weeks after pleading guilty to stamping.

The former Wales international was cited for the offence during the Sharks' 22-15 defeat by Worcester at Edgeley Park on February 29th.

The forward pleaded guilty at a Rugby Football Union disciplinary hearing at the Leeds Brighouse Holiday Inn on Monday night.

Cockbain was suspended by Sale head coach Kingsley Jones following the incident and subsequently missed the victory over Saracens at the weekend.

The 33-year-old left the Ospreys by mutual consent to join the Sharks on a two-and-a-half year deal last December.

In the 2004/05 season, Australian-born Cockbain helped the Ospreys win the Celtic League and Wales win the Grand Slam, scoring his first international try against Italy.

The lock will have to wait until April 9th to resume playing.

Sale will also have to do without Rory Lamont who has fractured his cheekbone and eye socket while playing for Scotland.

The winger collided with England full-back Iain Balshaw in the Calcutta Cup clash at Murrayfield at the weekend and faces up to eight weeks on the sidelines.
