Two people suspected of killing the British student Meredith Kercher have appealed against their detention today before an Italian judge.
Amanda Knox, an American 20-year-old who lived with Meredith, and her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 23, began their appeal at a Perugia courtroom where evidence against them is being re-examined.
If unsuccessful the pair can be held for up to a year before trial.
Ms Knox told the hearing that she is innocent and apologised for accusing a Congolese bar owner of killing Meredith who has since been released after questioning.
Meredith, 21, was found dead in her Perugia home on November 1st, with a post-mortem revealing her throat had been cut.
Police have suggested that Ms Kercher's murder was linked to a violent sex attack.
Both Ms Knox and Mr Sollecito deny involvement in her murder and say they were not at the house on the night of the attack.
The pair's lawyers are expected to challenge the DNA evidence said to have been found in the property and Ms Knox's lawyers will say that her original statement saying she was in the house when Meredith was killed was made under duress.
The fourth person police want to question about the case is Rudy Hermann Guede, an Ivory Coast immigrant who is in Germany awaiting extradition to Italy.
