Celtic defender John Kennedy has been ruled out for up to three months after being told he needs exploratory surgery on a knee injury.
The 24-year-old sustained the injury during last night's vital Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk at Parkhead.
That 2-1 victory, secured courtesy of Massimo Donati's last-minute winner, means the Bhoys need only a point from their visit to the San Siro to face champions AC Milan.
However the injury to Kennedy's left knee means the imposing defender will not be involved.
A statement from the club explained that the full extent of the damage has not yet been ascertained, and he could yet return before too long.
But the initial diagnosis is that Kennedy will not play again in 2007.
"Initial results show that John has sustained damage to his lateral meniscus and the posterior lateral complex of the knee, which could mean the injury isn't as severe as first thought," the statement reads.
"An arthroscopic investigation will be carried out on John's knee tomorrow morning (Friday) and will confirm the extent of the damage.
"If the initial diagnosis is confirmed, John could possibly return to action within 12 weeks."
