Two foreign aid workers have been kidnapped by armed men in Somalia, reports have claimed.

A local government official told news agencies the workers were abducted in the south of the volatile east African country.

Reports claim the workers are employed by the United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO).

A spokesperson for the FAO said the agency was unable to provide any further information and its Rome-based security team was looking into the reports.

The UK Foreign Office, which advises against all travel to war-torn Somalia, said it was "urgently investigating" reports of foreign aid workers being abducted.

A spokeswoman said she was unable to confirm whether either of the aid workers reportedly taken hostage was British.
