Blackburn Rovers midfielder Steven Reid has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
The Ireland international is expected to be out of action for up to seven months after having the joint problem assessed by a specialist because of persistent swelling.
And after consultation it was revealed by Rovers manager Paul Ince today that Reid will be flying out to the United States to see renowned knee surgeon Dr Richard Steadman for a further examination and a possible operation.
"Reidy will be out long term," Ince said.
"He's had this problem with his knee, he's been training, he's trained well, but his knee keeps swelling.
"He's been on a course of tablets to try to reduce the swelling, the doc has tried everything to get it right but the situation seems to be popping up all the time.
"So he has to go to see Dr Steadman to get his knee sorted out and it is going to be six or seven months."
Ince described the loss of the Republic of Ireland international as "a massive blow" but said he would stick by him throughout his recovery.
"He is an integral part of my side, he's great around the camp and he's got great experience," the Blackburn boss added.
"I'm gutted for him - he's a great lad and he always wants to give it all for the club.
"We are all disappointed but hopefully he'll come back with flying colours."
