Police arrested the man yesterday in connection with the killing
A man has been charged in connection with the killing of British soldier over 30 years ago.

The 57-year-old man, named in the media as IRA suspect Kevin Crilly, was arrested yesterday for his alleged role in the killing of Captain Robert Nairac.

Captain Nairac, 29, was kidnapped by the IRA on May 14th 1977 and later shot in the head in a Republic of Ireland forest.

The soldier's body has never been found.

A spokeswoman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed that the 57-year-old man has been charged with kidnap and false imprisonment.

He is now due to appear before Newry magistrates' court tomorrow morning.

Three IRA members were convicted of Mr Nairac's murder in 1977 and 1978 although the Associated Press news agency claims police have long claimed they wanted to question three other suspects.

One of the suspects, Terry McCormick, fled to the US and later appeared on a BBC television programme about the killing.
