Three suicide bombers and a roadside bomb kill at least 52 people and wound hundreds more in Baghdad
Three suicide bombers and a roadside bomb have killed at least 53 people and wounded hundreds more in Baghdad.
Local police say the attacks were aimed at Shia Muslim pilgrims taking part in a religious procession through the Iraqi capital.
The Associated Press claims the attacks took place in quick succession as tens of thousands of worshippers made their way to a shrine in northern Baghdad.
Reports also claim that all three of the bombers were female and that women and children were amongst those killed in the blasts.
At least a million people are expected to make the pilgrimage to the Kadhimiya shrine by Tuesday.
On Sunday, gunmen shot dead seven pilgrims in the outskirts of Baghdad despite Iraqi forces increasing security in the area.
The Kadhimiya pilgrimage is one of the main religious events on the Shia calendar and marks the death of one of the Shia Islam's 12 Imans.
