The director of Iran's national oil company has said a US ban on petrol imports would have absolutely no impact on Tehran's supplies.
"Iran supplies its petrol through non-American markets and firms," said Hojjatollah Ghanimifard, director of international affairs at the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).
As a consequence, he added, the ban will only hurt the American suppliers - not the target of the ban.
The US Senate finances committee recently gave the green light to a raft of new financial sanctions against Iran, targeting oil companies, petroleum products and nuclear materials.
The latest sanctions are part of a wider campaign by the West to force Iran to give up its nuclear energy program.
Many in the west believe Tehran is pursuing a nuclear weapons program under cover of its civilian atomic energy activities.
