The quake struck off the west coast of Sumatra
A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the west coast of Sumatra, the Indonesian meteorological and geophysical agency has said.

The quake led to an initial tsunami warning being issued, although this has since been withdrawn.

The earthquake struck at around 15:36 local time (08:36 GMT) this morning, 165km northwest of Sumatra's Mukimuko.

The US Geological Survey measured the earthquake at 7.0 magnitude, at a depth of 35km.

Local reports claim people were seen running from their houses in Bengkulu, 280km from the epicentre.

There have however not been any reports of fatalities or injuries as a result of the latest earthquake to hit near Indonesia.

Last Wednesday a 7.5 magnitude quake struck at the tip of Sumatra, killing three people and seriously injuring 25 others.

Indonesia is located in one of the most seismically active areas of the world. In 2004 a tsunami in the Indian Ocean left 168,000 people in the country dead.End of story
