New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori took 4-20 from his four overs to help his side to a ten-run win over India.
The 28-year-old veteran went for just five an over and won the player-of-the-match award for his efforts, which turned the game on its head just as India were beginning to emerge as favourites.
The game had started well for the Kiwis, with Brendon McCullum's 31-ball 45 and Craig McMillan's 23-ball 44 helping them bludgeon their way to 190 all out from their 20 overs.
In reply, India got off to a quick start and were actually edging ahead of the required run rate thanks to a half-century from opener Gautam Gambhir.
But then Vettori put himself on and, cleverly varying the pace and flight of the ball, frustrated four Indians into giving their wickets away.
After Robin Uthappa (0), Gambhir (51), Irfan Pathan (11) and Dinesh Karthik (17) had fallen the run-rate became unrealistic and, although India eventually finished ten runs short on 180-9, it was Vettori's efforts which had already won the game.
In Sunday's second match, Australia produced a dominant performance against Bangladesh to win by nine wickets with 37 balls remaining.
Brett Lee took Twenty20's first ever hat-trick by dismissing Shakib Al-Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza and Alok Kapali in the 17th over.
The Tigers, whose earlier victory against the West Indies had knocked the latter out of the tournament, ended on a meagre 123-8 before being put to the sword by Australia's openers.
Andy Gilchrist's 28-ball 43 and Matthew Hayden's 48-ball 73 not out helped their side finish on 124-1 at a run-rate of 8.96 per over.
