England captain Michael Vaughan has admitted that India deserved their series win over his side, but drew optimism from the performance of a bowling line-up shorn of some of its high-profile stars.
Today's draw in the third Test at the Oval meant that India registered their first series win on English soil since 1986 and the Yorkshire batsman was generous in defeat.
"It's been a really challenging Test series. All power to India, they played some really good cricket in the second and third Tests, put us under a lot of pressure and deserved to win it," he said.
He singled out the performances of the inexperienced pace trio of Ryan Sidebottom, James Anderson and Chris Tremlett for particular praise.
"The way a young, inexperienced bowling attack fought throughout the whole series, they can all take a lot of credit," he said.
"They're still relatively young and are learning fast from their mistakes. I'm proud of how the team have fought."
Coach Peter Moores and the selectors are now faced with a tricky selection dilemma as they assess their bowling options ahead of September's trip to Sri Lanka.
Andrew Flintoff, Matthew Hoggard and Simon Jones - three key members of the 2005 Ashes-winning team - will hope to have recovered fitness and be pushing for an international place by then.
