Tibetans 'facing more violence'

Saturday, 10 May 2008 00:01
Pro-Tibetan Olympic torch protests
China is likely to kill more Tibetan protestors when the Olympic torch arrives in the region next month, a member of the Tibetan government in exile has warned.

Sonam Frasi, the exiled government's representative in Europe, told inthenews.co.uk he believed Tibet's struggle for independence would trigger more violent reprisals.

Tibet's governor has already warned of fierce reprisals against any protests in the region when the torch arrives on June 24th.

"The Chinese government are going to be very, very tough and there will be lots of deaths and injuries," Mr Frasi said.

"The governor of Tibet under instructions from Beijing has already announced that he will deal with protests severely. We fear the protests."

Recent months have seen pro-Tibet protests by sympathisers around the world blighting the Olympic torch ahead of the 2012 Games in Beijing.

Mr Frasi, who was born in Tibet but moved to India when he was a child, said Tibetans are "not really interested" in the Games despite the attention it has brought to his cause.

And he expressed the hope that the Chinese government "will be made to think at least the Tibetan issue is not forgotten by the international community" as a result of the attention the issue is gathering around the world.

Mr Frasi called on the British government to support his cause ahead of the Dalai Lama's trip to see Gordon Brown later this month.

"Britain knows the real situation," he said, referring to the UK's colonial links with the Himalayan country through India.

"We would like Britain to voice strongly its feelings and attitudes about the situation… I'm doubtful, but we are hoping."End of story
