Three men have been arrested on terrorism charges
Three men have been arrested on terrorism charges at addresses in London and Wales.

The men are being held in police custody on suspicion of fundraising and 'procurement of acts of terrorism overseas'.

Scotland Yard have confirmed the arrests are part of a long-term investigation into Sri Lanka's rebel group, the Tamil Tigers.

At around 06:30 BST this morning officers from the Metropolitan police's Counter Terrorism Command joined Dyfed-Powys police officers in executing a number of search warrants under the Terrorism Act 2000 at residential and business address in Newtown, Powys.

A Metropolitan police statement confirmed that further warrants were executed at addresses in Mitcham and Harrow.

The three men arrested at separate address include a 46-year-old man and a 39-year-old man in Powys and a 33 year-old man in Mitcham.

The trio were arrested on suspicion of the "commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2000".

Police said that the men were now en-route to a central London police station.

The investigation is not linked to Al-Qaida activity, the Metropolitan police were keen to emphasise.

Two men have previously been arrested in connection with the inquiry.

The Tamil Tigers have been fighting for an independent Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka since the 1970s.

Over 70,000 people have been killed in the bitter fighting between the rebels and the country's government, with thousands more being forced from their homes.

The group is recognised as a terrorist organisation by the UK, US, the European Union and India.End of story
