Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle has been tipped for an Oscar after winning a Directors Guild of America (DGA) award.

The DGA's Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film is seen as a barometer for the Academy Award for Best Director.

Only six times since the DGA Awards began in 1948 has the winner not gone on to receive the Best Director Oscar. The film has ten nominations for the Academy Awards, to be held on February 22nd.

Joel and Ethan Coen, the director team that won the 2007 DGA Feature Film Award for No Country for Old Men, presented the award.

The movie, a rags-to-riches tale about a Mumbai slum-dweller, has now won four major awards.

Slumdog Millionaire itself almost went straight to DVD after Warner Independent closed down, but the studio passed the project on to Fox Searchlight.

"I should start by curiously thanking Warner Bros. for actually having the grace to do the right thing, when I think it would have been a lot easier to do the wrong thing, and pass the film on to Fox Searchlight, who are an extraordinary bunch of people," Boyle said at the ceremony.

The Office won the award for best television comedy, "The Wire" took the honour for TV drama and "Recount" won for TV movie.

Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert received an honorary life membership in the guild.
