Robert Kubica won his first Grand Prix after Lewis Hamilton crashed into the back of Kimi Raikkonen in the pit lane to throw away his chance of winning in Canada.
The 23-year-old Brit started from pole and opened up a 7.1 second lead before the safety car was sent out on lap 17 after marshals were needed to remove Adrian Sutil whose Force India was stranded.
This forced several drivers to come in for fuel and tyre changes on lap 19 but when they finished their stops the pit lane was still closed.
While Raikkonen and Kubica waited at the red light, Hamilton went straight into the back of his championship rival after failing to notice the stoppage.
Raikkonen was forced to retire and Hamilton suffered damage to his suspension that also ended his race.
The incident left Kubica free to race to victory as well as first place in the driver's championship.
The BMW driver is now four points clear of Hamilton and Felipe Massa after the Brazilian saw his race ruined when he lost communication during the safety car period.
He was forced to wait behind his Ferrari team-mate Raikkonen only to find that there was no fuel; forcing him to take another lap.
BMW's successful afternoon continued when Kubica's partner Nick Neidfeld came in second with Red Bull's David Coulthard finishing third.
Massa's fifth place finish ensured he scored points while Hamilton's team-mate Heikki Kovalainen continued his disappointing form with a ninth placed finish.
