Ford rejects India coaching offer

Ford will not be leaving behind Kent's Canterbury ground
Graham Ford, Kent's director of cricket, has turned down the opportunity to become coach of India's national side.

The popular South African had been in Chennai vying for the job to replace outgoing Greg Chappell alongside former England spinner John Emburey.

After receiving approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Ford considered his position over the weekend amid calls from his club to stay in England.

This morning he announced his decision to heed their appeals, saying he had made the decision to stay at Kent "after careful consideration".

"This has been a really difficult decision. I am honoured that India have shown such interest in my capabilities, but feel that this is the right decision for me and my family," he said.

Kent's chairman of cricket Graham Johnson said Ford's decision was "really great news" for the club.

He commented: "We are delighted Graham has decided to stay with us. I would like to say how much we appreciate the way Graham has handled the last few days."

Kent are currently fifth in the County Championship but lost out on a semi-final place yesterday after Hampshire recovered from 136-8 chasing Kent's total of 220.

Ford has a contract with the county until September 2008.
