A Piper Cherokee similar to that which crashed at Isle of Wight airport
Up to four people are feared dead after a light aircraft crashed upon takeoff on the Isle of Wight.

Eyewitnesses report seeing the Piper Cherokee plane struggle after leaving the ground; crashing within a minute of taking off.

The plane had been due to fly from Sandown to a destination in France but came down in a field in Ventnor Road, Shanklin.

Hampshire police indicated that there were no survivors of those travelling in the plane, but the number of people on board – either three or four – has not yet been confirmed.

"There are not thought to be any survivors but it is not known exactly how many died," a spokesman said.

The statement was backed up by Isle of Wight airport manager Richard Steele, who added: "The airport's fire services responded rapidly, supported by the local fire brigade."

An Air Accidents Investigation Branch inquiry into the crash is expected to begin shortly.End of story
