French president Nicolas Sarkozy has announced that he is to split from his wife Cecilia.
A statement from his office said the couple, who have been married for 11 years, agreed to the separation by "mutual consent".
Reports in the media had speculated that a split was imminent as the pair have not appeared together in public for some time.
They have a ten-year-old son together, Louis, and two children each from previous marriages.
Whether or not they will divorce has not yet emerged, with neither the couple nor the Elysee Palace commenting further on the split.
It is the second time the pair have undergone a separation; in 2005 Mrs Sarkozy, 49, lived with another man before reuniting with her husband last year.
The split comes just five months after Mr Sarkozy, 52, was voted as president. Although she is said to have played a crucial role in his rise to power Mrs Sarkozy said she had no desire to be a first lady.
