Mary Pierce has withdrawn from the French Olympic tennis team and will be replaced by world number 40 Pauline Parmentier.
The double grand slam winner was expected to represent France in the women's singles tournament, despite having not played professionally since undergoing knee surgery in 2006.
But Pierce, 33, has pulled out because of ongoing fears over the condition of the troublesome joint.
It was expected that Pierce would be replaced by former Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo.
However, the fellow two-time grand slam title-holder has since withdrawn herself because she wishes to focus on preparing for the US Open, which begins the week after the Olympic Games finishes.
Parmentier, 22, who recently won her second career title on the WTA Tour with victory in the Bad Gastein Ladies clay-court tournament in Austria - beating Lucie Hradecka in straight sets.
