Andy Murray has lost to Richard Gasquet in the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters, ending his hopes of qualifying for the season-ending Masters Cup.
The Scot would have been favourite to finish in the top eight in the ATP Race rankings after earlier seeing Tommy Robredo and Mikhail Youzhny crash out of the tournament at the same stage.
But he failed to take advantage of a slump in form from his French opponent in the second set and Murray gradually saw the match slip away from him as he succumbed to a 6-3 0-6 6-4 defeat.
A cagey match caught alight midway through the first set when Gasquet broke at 3-4, holding in the next game to seal the set.
But Murray took advantage of a capitulation by Gasquet in the next set as he began to apply pressure to tenth seed's game and forced a number of errors that put the French player on the back foot.
Despite scything through the second set without losing a game and looking likely to run away with the match, Murray suddenly found himself with work to do as Gasquet broke at 2-2 in the third set.
The young Briton failed to force his way back into the match from here on in though and the home favourite served out for a place in the semi-finals and a likely berth in the Masters Cup in Shanghai.
