Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of France under-21 defender Sebastien Bassong from FC Metz for an undisclosed fee.
The 22-year-old agreed personal terms and passed a medical earlier this week, according to a statement on the club's official website.
And he will finalise the formalities of the move, including his international clearance, in the next few days but has been given permission to travel with the rest of the Magpies squad to Mallorca for the pre-season Summer Cup.
Bassong is a graduate of the Clairefontaine academy in France, which has become famous for producing a generation of talented young French footballers.
He is capable of playing in the centre or on the left of a flat-back four and joins Newcastle after five years with Metz as a youngster since 2003 and on professional terms since 2005.
