Firefighters tackle blaze at Norfolk gas terminal complex

Thursday, 28 Feb 2008 19:36
Emergency services tackle fire at Bacton gas terminal in Norfolk, one of largest in the UK.
Emergency services have been called to a fire at the Bacton gas terminal in Norfolk, one of the largest in the UK.

Local media reports that around ten fire crews have been called to the Shell UK site on Paston Road in Bacton, north Norfolk, after a blaze erupted in a water treatment plant on the site.

The Bacton terminal houses gas processing plants used by companies including Shell UK; Tullow Oil; Gas de France; RWE; DEA; Perenco; DEA and Venture Productions.

It is also home to the Interconnector system which feeds gas between Europe and the UK.

Norfolk Fire Service said it was not believed if any chemicals were involved but said the fire was being treated as a major incident.

Patricia Myles, a local resident whose garden overlooks the terminal's site, told reporters she had had heard a "bang" on Thursday evening.

"I walked along the track and all I could see was black smoke," Ms Myles explained.

"Once I got to the end of the lane there were flames shooting up ten or 20 feet, maybe more, in the air and within about five or six minutes the flames went down and there was just a lot of black smoke.

"But there was a lot of activity going on, with sirens and everyone running about there."End of story
