New Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello has insisted he does want to keep David Beckham at the Bernabeu.
Capello is expected to stage a mass clearout at the Spanish club as he and newly-elected president Ramon Calderon look to rebuild the struggling team.
Veteran galacticos Roberto Carlos, Zinedine Zidane, who is retiring, and Brazilian striker Ronaldo are said to be on their way out but Beckham will stay, according to Capello.
"I thought Beckham had a good World Cup and it was unfortunate what happened to England," Capello told The Sun.
"It was a pity he got injured and it's understandable that he was hurt by what happened afterwards.
"But Beckham is still a great player. I'm looking forward to working with him - he's an important player for Real Madrid."
Beckham was last week strongly linked with a move to Newcastle after chairman Freddy Shepherd was seen meeting the 31-year-old midfielder and wife Victoria.
A number of other Premiership clubs have also been touted as possible destinations for the former Manchester United star.
