Al-Fayed losses bid to force royal family into court

Mohamed al-Fayed failed in his bid
Mohamed al-Fayed has lost his bid to make the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh give evidence at the inquest into the deaths of his son Dodi and Princess Diana.

He had asked for a review of the decision, by the coroner Lord Justice Scott Baker, not to call on the royal pair to attend the inquest.

"We believe the late princess' former parents in law have information which only they alone can give to the inquest and it is relevant to the matters being investigated," said Mr al-Fayed's spokesperson, Michael Cole, earlier.

Today is the final day of evidence at the inquest into the death of the Princess of Wales and is expected to be concluded by the coroner in the next few weeks.

Princess Diana and Dodi al-Fayed died in a Paris car crash in August 1997. Harrods' owner Mr al-Fayed has alleged that the pair were killed in an assassination plot involving the British secret service and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Earlier this month Lord Justice Scott Baker announced that the Queen would not be called upon.

"In my judgment it is not expedient to call the Duke of Edinburgh to give evidence, nor do I think the Queen should be asked to answer the questions posed," he said.

"Neither step will, in my judgment, further the inquest process."

Mr al-Fayed returned to the witness box today to enable him to clarify the evidence he gave last month.End of story
