Hull City have beaten Newcastle United 1-0 in their FA Cup third round replay at St James' Park.
Despite naming a much-changed side from their last league outing at the weekend the Tigers still managed to reach the fourth round of the competition for the first time in 20 years.
As in the original tie at the KC Stadium ten days ago the replay was a match of few chances but it was Daniel Cousin who managed to grab the winner for the visitors ten minutes from full time.
Newcastle started brightly and winger Xisco almost scored early in the game but his shot went just over the bar.
Nicky Butt nearly broke the deadlock at St James' Park after 20 minutes but his bullet header rebounded back off the crossbar.
Moments after that Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini clattered into Cousin, although the Hull striker seemed to make the most of the contact that was made, and both sets of players argued with each other.
That led to another clash off the field as Joe Kinnear and Phil Brown went face-to-face in a heated argument on the touchline. Referee Phil Dowd was forced to intervene and sent both managers to the stands.
Newcastle continued to enjoy the majority of the possession but could not find a way past Hull so the match went into the break scoreless.
At the beginning of the second half Michael Owen had a glorious chance to put the Magpies in front but Hull goalkeeper Matt Duke made an excellent save to tip the England striker's shot around the post.
Although Newcastle dominated the second 45 minutes they failed to break down a stoic Tigers defence and were made to pay the penalty for their lack of creativity.
Cousin managed to get the winner as Hull capitalised on a rare foray into the Newcastle penalty area. The Magpies failed to clear the danger and the ball ricocheted to Richard Garcia. He then squared it to Cousin who calmly slotted home.
Owen had another good chance late on that would have sent the match into extra-time, although he was unmarked in the box he could only guide his header high over the bar from six yards out.
Hull will now face Millwall at the KC Stadium in the fourth round.
