Palestinian groups have agreed, in principle, on a ceasefire with Israel
A number of Palestinian groups have agreed, in principle, on a ceasefire with Israel.

The groups met in Cairo for talks mediated by Egypt today and agreed to proposals of a six-month truce, a prisoner exchange and a reopening of the border between Gaza and Israel, the state news agency MENA said.

The proposal will now be put before Israel for its acceptance.

The truce is set to start in the Gaza Strip before being applied to the West Bank.

"All the Palestinian factions have agreed to the Egyptian proposal on a truce with Israel," MENA cited an Egyptian official as saying.

The unnamed official declared the proposal included a "comprehensive, reciprocal and simultaneous truce, implemented in a graduated framework starting in the Gaza Strip and then subsequently moving to the West Bank," the Egyptian news agency added.

Egypt invited 12 Palestinian groups to attend the talks this week, in the aim of arriving at a consensus on a proposal for a ceasefire with Israel.

The situation in the region continues to be volatile, with the AFP news agency reporting that 30 Palestinians were arrested by Israeli troops earlier today at a refugee camp in the north West Bank town of Nablus.End of story
