US president George Bush has addressed the World Economic Forum (WEF) claiming that peace in the Middle East is possible by the end of the year.

In a speech in Egypt Mr Bush claimed that "tough sacrifices" were needed if peace was to be established in the region.

He also used the occasion to once again attack Iran over its nuclear programme.

Mr Bush claimed that the Middle East was "home to energetic people; a powerful spirit of enterprise, and tremendous resources".

He added: "It is capable of a very bright future - a future in which the Middle East is a place of innovation and discovery, driven by free men and women.

"I firmly believe that with leadership and courage, we can reach that peace agreement this year... This is a demanding task, and it requires action on all sides.

"Palestinians must fight terror and continue to build the institutions of a free and peaceful society. Israel must make tough sacrifices for peace and ease restrictions on Palestinians," he said.

The US president has repeatedly claimed that he hopes a peace agreement can be reached in the Middle East before he steps down from office at the end of this year.

Mr Bush made his speech to the WEF at the end of his tour of the region which included a three-day visit to Israel to join celebrations marking the country's 60th anniversary.

During his speech Mr Bush also declared his support for the people of Lebanon in "their struggle to build a sovereign and independent democracy".

"This means opposing Hezbollah terrorists, funded by Iran, who recently revealed their true intentions by taking up arms against the Lebanese people," he added.
