Olympic drug ban rules to be assessed

Olympic chiefs to consult athletes on drug ban
The British Olympics Association (BOA) is set to consult athletes about their views on bans for drug cheats.

The moves comes after Dwain Chambers was unable to secure an injunction that would suspend his lifetime ban and pave the way for him to compete in the Olympics in China in August.

BOA chairman Lord Moynihan said Olympic athletes would be balloted on the fairness of the bylaw, which bars professionals from competing at events in the case of substance abuse.

Moynihan said: "We will ask the British Athletes Commission, which is independent of us, to undertake a survey on the bylaw after Beijing.

"This verdict has strengthened our resolve that it's the right approach but we also want to make sure we are reflecting the athletes' wishes.

"I don't believe this will change that bylaw but we need to keep it under review," he added.

While the judge in the case did not rule in favour of Chambers, he stated that many people "both inside and outside sport" could consider the bylaw as unlawful.
