Hundreds of Tibetan women held after protest

Sunday, 11 May 2008 19:06
Over 600 Tibetan women have been detained in Nepal for anti-China protests
Over 600 Tibetan women are being held by police in Nepal's capital following a protest against China's crackdown in their country.

Reports say police made the arrests after three demonstrations were held.

The detained protestors are expected to be freed later in the day.

Nepal is home to a large number of exiled Tibetans and there have been a number of anti-China demonstrations in the past few weeks.

Officials do not want to allow the protests in order to maintain friendly relations with its neighbour China.

"Just to create what is happening in Tibet we wanted to do a silent march here, a peaceful silent march," Doma Tsomo, one of the protesters, told the Associated Press news agency.

"Unfortunately even before we could start police started arresting people."

Anti-China activity has been triggered by China's crackdown on protests in Tibet during March.
