American sprinter Tyson Gay edged out Derrick Atkins and Asafa Powell to win the men's 100 metre title in Osaka, Japan.
Powell had led the race but appeared to tighten up as Gay stormed through to win in an impressive 9.85 seconds.
It was another disappointing performance on the big stage for the Jamaican who finished fifth in Athens in 2004.
Following his victory Gay said: "It just feels so good and it was important for me to beat the world record holder."
The world champion added: "Powell had an excellent start but when it got to 60m, I though I could catch him. I'm looking forward to racing him again and I think there will be a great rivalry in the future.
"I believe I can get the world record another day, but for now this is a stepping-stone and I want to stay focused on Beijing."
Great Britain's medal hopeful Marlon Devonish had to settle for sixth place with a time of 10.14.
A clearly disappointed Devonish told BBC Sport: "It was always going to be a tall order to get on the podium but I'm gutted.
"I'm better than that. I felt comfortable in the rounds but just didn't come through at the end. I didn't panic, but maybe it was one race too many."
Great Britain's other hopefuls Craig Pickering and Mark Lewis-Francis failed to make the final.
